Feature Presentation
Genealogy Resources at Plainfield Public Library
Presentation by Sarah Hull
This presentation will introduce the Local History, Genealogy & Special Collections Department at Plainfield Public Library. The local history collection, one of the largest in Union County, is composed of books, documents, photographs, blueprints, maps, newspapers, personal papers, and local organizations’ records of significance in Plainfield and the surrounding communities. The Plainfield Public Library is an Affiliate Library of FamilySearch.org and of the Mayflower Society.
Attendees may use the collections following the presentation up to 2:30 p.m. However, due to limited space we kindly request you let us know in advance. Please email Sarah Hull.
Sarah Hull is an archivist and Department Head of the Local History, Genealogy & Special Collections Department at Plainfield Public Library. She is a member of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference (MARAC) and a former consultant with the MARAC – New Jersey Caucus Archival Projects Evaluation Service (CAPES). She is also a member of the New Jersey Library Association (NJLA), and a former NJLA History & Preservation Section President. In 2017, Ms. Hull received NJLA’s Susan G. Swartzburg Preservation Award in recognition of her statewide leadership and dedication to the preservation of archival, library, and historical materials.

Driving Directions
Park Avenue is Route 531 into Plainfield; it curves past JFK Medical Center Muhlenberg Campus. When you pass the High School on your left, the Library is on the left in the next block.
From the NORTH, take I-78 (East or West) to Exit 40 (The Plainfields)
Coming from East, turn left off ramp. Coming from West, turn right. Continue south to the bottom of the hill. Turn right at the STOP sign, proceed 3/4 of the way around the circle, following the signs for Route 531 South & The Plainfields. As Route 22 comes into view, prepare to turn left to go over the ramp. Look for the blue “H” (hospital route) sign.
At bottom of ramp, turn left onto Somerset Street. Once you’ve crossed into Plainfield, Somerset Street becomes Park Avenue. Go under the railroad trestle and begin looking at the cross streets which have numbers. 8th Street is about 5 blocks beyond the railroad. Just after the light at West 8th Street, turn right into the Library parking lot.
From ROUTE 22 (East or West)
Take exit marked “Somerset St. – The Plainfields”
(From East, drive under the overpass. Turn right and right again onto overpass. Proceed as above.
From the South via NJ TURNPIKE
Turnpike North to Garden State Parkway North
Go north one exit to 131-A on the Parkway
Follow directions below from Parkway.
From the South via GARDEN STATE PARKWAY
Take Exit 131-A which becomes Wood Avenue.
Proceed under the railroad tracks to the traffic light at the top of the hill and turn left onto Oak Tree Road. Continue for approximately 3 miles, then turn right on Park Avenue to 8th Street (6 traffic lights). Turn left into lot.
By NJ Transit Train
Take the Raritan Valley Rail Line to the Plainfield Train Station. The Library is 4 blocks south on Park Avenue.
By NJ Transit Bus
- The #65 and the #114 stop at W. 7th Street and Park Avenue. Walk 1 block up Park Avenue to W. 8th Street.
- The #59 stops at W. 5th Street and Watchung Avenue. Walk 5 blocks to the Library.
- The #113 stops at Front Street and Park Avenue. Walk 6 blocks to the Library.
- The #819 stops at W. 8th Street and Park Avenue. It also stops at the Metuchen Rail Station.
- The #822 stops at W. 8th Street and Park Avenue.

Library and Street Parking
The Library occupies one square block between 8th and 9th Streets and between Park Avenue and College Place. There are two parking lots, located at either end of the building. All parking is free, including street parking.
